The editors of this text provide firsthand testimony to thernrapid evolution of the nurse practitioner role. Initially educatedrnas family nurse practitioners in the early 90s, two ofrnthe editors work exclusively within the critical care environmentrnin a relatively independent manner and have subsequentlyrnadvanced their degrees to attain certification. Bothrnprovide care for extremely ill patients and perform complexrninvasive procedures on a regular basis.
